Water Main Cleaning

During March 2017, Utility Service Group, in conjunction with Maple Shade Township, Remington & Vernick Engineers and Woodard & Curran will begin a program known as ice pigging to clean various sections of water main within the Township. Ice pigging involves the use of an ice slurry which is pumped into the main under pressure. The slurry and residual material are then discharged from the main and removed from the system. The ice slurry will help to remove the tuberculation (the common cause of discolored water) which naturally builds up on the inside of the pipes over time. This process utilizes pressurized ice to insure that no harmful or unwanted substances are introduced into the system.

The ice pigging will be done on the following streets: Martin, W Center, Cutler, W Mill, Sunset, County, Spruce, S Poplar, Buena Vista, and E Mill. Below is a more detailed outline of where the ice pigging will exactly take place. This ice pigging project will occur from March 28th to the 30th. Some sections of these roads may be excavated to inspect the effectiveness of this process.

While this project is in progress, the residents supplied by the section of main being cleaned will experience a disruption in water service until the cleaning process is completed. Residents in surrounding areas may also experience service disruptions depending upon which valves need to be closed to isolate the section of main being cleaned. Separate sections will be cleaned over the three day period and water service to the effected residents will be restored at the end of each work day.

This project may temporarily cause brown water in the system, especially in the immediate area around the streets mentioned above. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, however, the water is no less safe to drink or use during this time. If you experience brown water, please run the cold water until it runs clear. If you wish to report the issue or have any questions regarding the ice pigging project, please call the Maple Shade Water Department at 856-488-7450. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards a better system for the residents of Maple Shade.
